German Police Investigate Teen Shooting at Historic Jewish Cemetery as 'Bad Joke'

In Langenselbold, Hesse, Germany, a group of teenagers fired shots at tombstones in a Jewish cemetery designated as a historic preservation site on Saturday evening. The incident, which desecrated the graves, prompted a police investigation after a local witness reported seeing youths shooting at the graves. Five suspects, including a 15-year-old boy who initially fled on foot but was later found nearby, were taken into custody and questioned. The firearm used was not recovered, and only one tombstone was damaged, with estimated repair costs of around 500 euros.

Authorities stated that there is currently no evidence indicating a political or far-right extremist motive, describing the act as a "bad joke." Despite this, the event is part of a broader concern over rising antisemitism in Hesse, where documented antisemitic incidents have significantly increased. The Hessian Center for Research and Information on Antisemitism reported a notable rise in such cases, including an attempt to desecrate at least 21 other graves in the same cemetery about a year ago.

This incident adds to the growing alarm over antisemitic acts in Germany, highlighting ongoing challenges in protecting Jewish heritage sites and communities. The police have released the suspects without further legal action but continue to monitor the situation amid heightened sensitivity to antisemitic violence in the region.
