Channel 14 Files Urgent Petition Against Democrats Party Over Media Ban at Primaries Event

Channel 14 submitted an urgent petition on Monday to the Tel Aviv District Court, requesting a temporary injunction to compel the Democrats party to allow its media teams access to the primaries results announcement event. The channel claims it is the only media outlet barred from attending, despite the party inviting all other national and international media and permitting them to set up broadcast stations at the venue. Channel 14 argues this exclusion constitutes unlawful discrimination, violating press freedom, freedom of expression, and the rights of its hundreds of thousands of viewers to receive direct political event coverage.

The petition cites a 2022 Supreme Court ruling from a previous case between the parties, which held that a political party is a dual-natured entity bound by principles of equality and fairness and cannot discriminate against media access to public events. Given the urgency, as the event is scheduled for Monday evening, Channel 14 requests immediate court intervention to grant its teams equal access and broadcasting conditions as other media outlets.

Channel 14 condemned the Democrats party's decision as a severe infringement on press freedom, likening it to regressive practices. The channel also criticized other media outlets for cooperating with the exclusion, warning that silence today may lead to future censorship against them.
