Channel 14 Files Urgent Court Petition Against Democrats Party Over Media Ban

Channel 14 filed an urgent petition on Monday at the Tel Aviv District Court against the Democrats party, demanding a temporary injunction to allow its broadcast teams to cover the party's primary election results announcement scheduled for that evening. The channel claims it was deliberately excluded while all other national and international media outlets were granted access and allowed to set up dedicated broadcast stations at the event venue. Channel 14 argues this exclusion constitutes discrimination and severely infringes on press freedom, freedom of expression, and the public's right to direct reporting.

The petition references a 2022 Supreme Court precedent establishing that political parties are dual-natured entities subject to principles of equality and fairness, prohibiting selective denial of media access to public events. Given the tight schedule and the imminent announcement of the primary results, Channel 14 requested an immediate court order to grant it entry and broadcasting rights identical to those of other media.

In response, Channel 14 condemned the Democrats party's decision as a serious violation of press freedom, likening it to regressive practices from darker times. The channel also criticized other media outlets for cooperating with the exclusion, warning that silence today could lead to future censorship against them.
