Channel 14 Sues Democratic Party Over Media Access to Primary Results Event

Channel 14 filed an urgent petition with the Tel Aviv District Court demanding that the Democratic Party allow its crews to enter the party's primary election results announcement event scheduled for this evening at Hangar 11 in Tel Aviv port. The channel claims it is the only media outlet barred from covering the event, while all other national and international media were invited and permitted to set up broadcast positions.

The petition argues this exclusion constitutes unlawful discrimination that infringes on press freedom, freedom of expression, and the public's right to receive direct information from a politically significant event. Channel 14 cites a 2022 Supreme Court ruling which established that political parties must adhere to principles of equality and fairness, prohibiting them from discriminating against media outlets when granting access to public events.

According to the petition, Channel 14 only learned about the event through a third party after the party's spokesperson failed to send them an invitation. When the channel requested entry approval, they were denied without explanation. A warning letter sent to the party was also rejected. Channel 14 is requesting immediate court intervention to allow its teams to attend and broadcast from the event under the same conditions as other media, warning that any delay would render the petition moot since the event is imminent.

Channel 14 condemned the Democratic Party's decision as a severe violation of press freedom, lamenting that other media outlets are cooperating with this exclusion. The channel warned that silence today could lead to future media blacklisting.
