Microsoft Ends OneDrive Support for Older Windows 10 Versions Starting 2026

Microsoft has announced that starting August 15, 2026, it will stop updating the OneDrive synchronization app on Windows 10 versions 21H2 and earlier. This means these versions will no longer receive new features, bug fixes, or critical security updates for OneDrive. Although the app will continue to function temporarily after this date, future system changes and newly discovered bugs may render it unusable without the possibility of fixes from Microsoft.

This decision aligns with Microsoft's lifecycle policy for Windows and aims to focus resources on supported operating systems. Currently, Windows 10 holds about 28% of the Windows market share, compared to approximately 70% for the newer Windows 11. Microsoft is encouraging users still on older Windows 10 versions to upgrade to ensure continued secure and reliable synchronization of their files.

Users who prefer not to upgrade to Windows 11 can still use Windows 10 version 22H2, which will continue to receive OneDrive updates until October 10, 2028. Additionally, if the OneDrive app stops working due to compatibility issues, users can still access their files manually through a web browser.

Windows 10 users are advised to check their system version and consider upgrading to version 22H2 or Windows 11 to avoid disruptions in OneDrive service and maintain secure file synchronization.
