Young Man Dies From Gunshot Wounds in Haifa Amid Rising Arab Community Violence

Riad Hazmiya, a 22-year-old resident of Haifa, succumbed to severe abdominal gunshot wounds sustained during a shooting incident on April 30 in Haifa, near the border of the Hadar and Wadi Nisnas neighborhoods. Initially treated at Rambam Hospital in Haifa, he was transferred to Sheba Medical Center in Tel Hashomer in June at his family's request. Doctors declared his death on Sunday, turning the ongoing investigation by the Haifa District Central Unit into a murder inquiry. No arrests have been reported so far.

Hazmiya is the 157th victim of lethal violence in the Arab community since the start of 2026, marking a 13% increase compared to the same period last year, which itself ended with a record number of murders. This trend highlights a continuing surge in violent crime within the community.

Separately, on the same day as Hazmiya's death, a man in his 40s was critically wounded in a shooting in Kafr Kanna, a village in the Galilee region. Emergency medical teams treated him for penetrating injuries and transported him to Poriya Medical Center in serious but stable condition. Paramedic Hannah Barness described the scene, emphasizing the severity of the victim's wounds and the urgent medical response.

Authorities continue to investigate both incidents amid growing concerns over escalating violence in Arab localities across northern Israel.
