Israeli Police Crack Down on Dangerous Wedding Convoys in Southern Israel
The Israeli Police conducted a targeted enforcement operation over the weekend against life-endangering traffic violations during wedding convoys in the southern region. Police forces, including Border Police and other units, were deployed on main roads and identified serious offenses such as excessive speeding and endangering road users. Prior to the operation, police mapped out wedding hotspots and expected travel routes of celebrants in local communities.
During the weekend, ten wedding convoys were inspected, resulting in 24 traffic tickets. Most citations were for speeding, with 11 drivers caught exceeding the speed limit. The most severe cases involved two drivers recorded driving at 150 km/h and 182 km/h on a road where the speed limit is 90 km/h; both received summons for legal proceedings. Additional tickets were issued for using mobile phones while driving (three cases) and operating vehicles banned from traffic (two cases).
Police also detained a suspect driving without ever having obtained a license and issued a ticket to another unauthorized driver. Three vehicles were removed from the road due to safety defects, one was impounded, and another was seized as part of an investigation into endangering human life. Two other drivers were summoned for hearings. Authorities noted that despite the increased police presence, no reports of gunfire from wedding convoys or venues were received throughout the weekend.
