Israeli Actress and Singer Shoshik Shani Dies at 91 After Cancer Battle
Shoshik Shani, a renowned Israeli actress and singer, passed away this morning at the age of 91 following a battle with cancer. Born Shoshana Shprong in Tel Aviv, she was a prominent figure in the Cameri Theater for over three decades and had a prolific career spanning theater, film, television, and music. Shani was especially known for her starring role as the miller’s daughter in the original production of the musical "Otzi Le Gutsi," a major success in Israeli theater history.
She began her artistic journey early, performing in children's theater at age 14 and later studying acting at the Cameri Theater studio. After serving in the Nahal entertainment troupe, she joined the Cameri Theater as a leading actress. Shani was married to singer and actor Arik Lavie from 1957 until his death in 2004; the couple collaborated extensively on stage and in television, including the popular entertainment program "Hu VeHi" written by Ephraim Kishon.
Beyond theater, Shani appeared in numerous Israeli films such as "Hole in the Moon," "Aliza Mizrahi," and "Operation Jonathan," and starred in TV series including "Hedva VeShlomik," "Bnot HaZahav," and "Stockholm." She was also beloved for her children’s music, releasing several albums and performing classic Hebrew children’s songs like "Michael" and "What Do the Trees Do." In 2022, she was honored with the Yakirat Tel Aviv award for her cultural contributions.
Shani leaves behind two daughters and a legacy cherished by generations of Israeli children who grew up with her performances and songs.
