Israeli Author Meir Shalev’s Final Months Revealed Through Daughter’s Memoir
Meir Shalev, the renowned Israeli author, dictated a pragmatic and detailed file of instructions to his children, Zohar and Michael, after being diagnosed with terminal cancer. This file, humorously titled "Dad Makes a Mess," included everything from the epitaph on his gravestone to the list of funeral speakers. Zohar recalls how her father’s straightforward approach helped the family prepare for his death, which came after a rapid five-month battle with a rare and incurable cancer.
Throughout his illness, Shalev remained remarkably composed and pragmatic, using humor as a coping mechanism. He openly shared his condition with family and friends, emphasizing transparency. His daughter describes the last week of his life as a powerful time spent together at home, where he passed away peacefully in April 2023. Shalev had previously experienced a near-death event during his military service, which left him unafraid of death.
Shalev’s literary career began in satire and journalism before he became a full-time writer in the late 1980s. He authored iconic works of Israeli literature, including adult novels like "A Russian Novel" and "One of These Days," as well as beloved children’s books such as "The Lice Nachem" and "Kramer the Cat Always Sleeps." His stories often drew on his childhood in the Jezreel Valley, blending humor, humanity, and a deep connection to the land.
A film adaptation of "One of These Days," completed shortly before his death, faced distribution challenges in Europe due to fears of protests following the October 7 attacks in Israel. However, it later won Best Film at the Bari Film Festival and is set for limited U.S. screenings. Zohar reflects on her father’s political outspokenness and his prescient warnings about the country’s trajectory after the Six-Day War.
Zohar also shares personal memories of her father’s disciplined writing routine, his multifaceted personality, and his role as a beloved grandfather. She notes the overwhelming public response to his passing, with millions of messages and tributes highlighting his profound impact. Despite his fame, Shalev remained a deeply private and complex individual, known affectionately as "Desi" within the family. His legacy continues through his writings and the memories cherished by his loved ones.
