Israeli Forces Arrest Suspect in Attempted Vehicle Attack Near Tarkumia Checkpoint
On September 6, 2024, Israeli security forces responded to a suspected attempted vehicle-ramming attack near the Tarkumia checkpoint in Israel's rear area. According to reports, a driver tried to run over police officers manning a checkpoint before fleeing toward the West Bank. Following the incident, Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) reservists at the checkpoint detained a vehicle suspected of involvement, but police later clarified it was not the attacker’s car. Security forces continue searching for the suspect and investigating the circumstances.
This incident follows a similar vehicle attack in June at the southern hitchhiking post near the Gush Etzion junction. In that attack, a 30-year-old assailant from Hebron was killed by an IDF soldier from the Nachshon Battalion of the Kfir Brigade after injuring several teenagers, including a 17-year-old girl seriously hurt and a 15-year-old girl lightly injured. The IDF and police conducted extensive searches and roadblocks in Hebron and surrounding areas to prevent further attacks.
Yaron Rosenthal, head of the Gush Etzion Regional Council, described the June attack as severe, noting the attacker attempted to run over a group of youths before being quickly neutralized by the military. He emphasized the community’s century-long presence in the area and their determination to maintain their hold on Gush Etzion’s Mount Tabor.
The ongoing security operations reflect heightened vigilance in the region amid repeated attempts by militants to carry out vehicle-ramming attacks against Israeli civilians and security personnel.
