Hamas Arms Gaza Clans to Counter Israel-Backed Militias
Hamas is advancing a covert effort to arm clans in the Gaza Strip in order to curb militias backed by Israel, it was reported Thursday evening on Kan News. Palestinian sources in the Gaza Strip told Kan News that Hamas is arming clans in the northern Strip and in areas near the yellow line.
The goal is to reduce the influence of the armed militias enjoying Israeli support and prevent them from taking control of additional areas in the Strip. The move also provides protection for Hamas operatives from targeted strikes and frustrates the Israeli plan to expand the militias’ control into additional areas.
The terrorist organization believes it will be able to regain control from the clans in the future relatively easily, thanks to understandings with them. In addition, arming the clans helps Hamas curb anarchy and crime in areas under its patronage.
