Over 100 Haredi Journalists Gather in Jerusalem to Launch Historic Council
A historic event took place this week at the Museum of Tolerance in Jerusalem, where around 100 journalists from various Haredi media outlets convened for the founding conference of the Haredi Journalists Council. This initiative, led by the Zericha Foundation, aims to establish a professional body to support Haredi journalists by providing legal assistance and protection against frivolous lawsuits and undue pressures. Participants included editors, reporters, and broadcasters from prominent Haredi and general media such as Kikar HaShabbat, BeChadrei Charedim, Galei Tzahal, Channel 14, Kol Berama, and others.
The conference began with a guided tour of the Museum of Tolerance, showcasing interactive exhibits dedicated to bridging societal sectors and documenting Israeli history. Attendees registered for immediate membership cards at the event. Rabbi Ben Zion Nordman opened the conference, emphasizing the importance of direct communication and the ethical challenges Haredi journalists face balancing public interest with religious responsibility. He clarified that the council’s role is not to adjudicate ideological or halachic disputes but to offer professional and legal support.
Chief Rabbi of Israel, Rabbi Kalman Bar, who was the guest of honor, blessed the council’s establishment and highlighted the role of journalism in benefiting the public without resorting to slander or gossip. A special tribute was given to veteran Haredi commentator Yaakov Rivlin for his 40 years of responsible political journalism. Dr. Avishai Ben Chaim delivered the keynote lecture, tracing the evolution of Haredi media from print to digital eras, earning respect for his balanced coverage of the community.
Haredi journalist Dana Bezalel introduced the Haredi Women Journalists Council, underscoring the unique professional challenges faced by female reporters. Attorney Rivka Dagan presented legal strategies for combating gag orders and protecting media outlets from unjust legal threats. The event was praised by attendees as a significant step forward in strengthening Haredi journalism’s independence and professionalism. Online registration for council membership is currently open. The event’s logistics were managed by artist Peri Leibovitz and producer Mendy Rahamim, with communications consultant Yehuda Cohen overseeing the program.
