New Haredi Journalists Council Backed by Left-Leaning Foundation Sparks Debate
Next week will see the launch of a new Haredi Journalists Council aimed at operating within the ultra-Orthodox community. However, the initiative has drawn scrutiny due to its backing by the Zricha Foundation, managed by Avi Widerman, a figure with a left-wing political background. The foundation reportedly received hundreds of thousands of shekels in donations from abroad and includes activists identified with leftist causes.
The council's establishment comes amid claims that left-leaning organizations have been attempting to influence the Haredi community from within. One such group mentioned is "Mothers on the Frontline," associated with the Kaplan protest movement, which allegedly sought to impact Haredi society internally.
Avi Widerman, who previously led the "New Majority" association working to unite left and center parties against the right-wing government, has openly expressed his political views, including hopes for the decline of the Likud party. Critics argue that the new council is effectively run by someone with a clear political agenda.
In response, Widerman stated that the foundation's mission is to protect and promote Haredi values and the status of Torah scholars. He emphasized the foundation's role as a research institute and advocate for the Haredi community, running leadership programs and scholarship initiatives. Widerman also noted that donors include both Haredi and secular Jews from Israel and the US, none seeking publicity.
Addressing his political past, Widerman said he dedicates his adult life to projects benefiting Israel and values working with people of differing views. He rejected accusations that the foundation's work is liberal activism, highlighting the involvement of many Haredi leaders in its activities. Widerman invited the public to engage with the foundation's upcoming events and meet community leaders promoting beneficial public policies for the Haredi sector.
