New Jersey Babysitter Accused of Sexual Abuse Denies Charges, Blames Toddler
Victoria Ann Cranmer, a 25-year-old babysitter from New Jersey, appeared in Ocean County court accused of second-degree sexual assault of a two-year-old girl she was caring for on May 6. The charges also include producing and possessing child sexual abuse material and endangering the welfare of a minor. The case centers on a 14-second Snapchat video showing Cranmer laughing while the toddler touches her in a bathroom, which prosecutors argue documents the abuse.
During the initial hearing, Cranmer broke down in tears but, through her attorney Marissa Korner, claimed the video captured an innocent moment reflecting a toddler's natural curiosity and lack of understanding of personal boundaries. Korner argued that young children often follow adults into bathrooms and touch things without recognizing social norms. However, prosecutor Lynn Huan emphasized the critical issue is Cranmer's reaction, noting she appeared amused and did not stop the child.
Judge Kenneth Palmer described the footage as "strange" and expressed concern over the babysitter's failure to intervene. He ruled that Cranmer must remain in custody without bail pending further proceedings. The case came to light after a dispute between Cranmer and a woman she lived with for three months, who found the video on a gifted phone and handed it to authorities. Forensic analysis revealed additional videos of Cranmer and the child in the same bathroom.
The child's mother reported Cranmer had previously cared for her daughter but ceased doing so after noticing behavioral changes and learning about the video. Cranmer was arrested on July 8 and remains detained at Ocean County Jail. The defense's attempt to downplay the video as non-criminal has not persuaded the court so far.
