Widow Remembers Husband Who Died Months After Iranian Missile Strike in Haifa

Nina Katz, widow of Michael Katz, recalled the harrowing moments following the Iranian ballistic missile strike during Operation "Roaring Lion" that severely injured her husband. Michael, a Haifa resident, was caught in the attack while in the shower and was rescued from the rubble of their building on Shimshon Street 57. Despite intensive medical care over more than three months, he succumbed to his injuries on Wednesday morning. The missile strike also killed four neighbors from the Gershovich family.

Michael Katz, 82, was a longtime employee of Rafael Advanced Defense Systems and a recipient of the Rafael Prize for his contributions to Israel's security. He is survived by his wife Nina, sons Itamar and Yoav, and six grandchildren. His funeral is scheduled for Thursday at Shaar Brosh Cemetery in Haifa.

Nina, who was also injured in the attack, described the trauma of hearing Michael's cries for help and her inability to assist him. She expressed gratitude for surviving and reflected on their 55 years of marriage, emphasizing the deep void his passing leaves. She is currently living in temporary housing as their building was completely destroyed and will take years to rebuild.

Their son Yoav shared the family's hope for recovery that faded over the months. He remembered Michael as a dedicated worker, family man, and cultured individual who loved traveling and the arts. Yoav also recounted how his daughter Yuval, a rescue unit member in the Home Front Command, participated in the search efforts at the site and found a photo of her grandfather among the debris.

The missile strike on the residential building in Haifa resulted in significant destruction and loss of life, highlighting the ongoing risks faced by civilians in the region amid regional tensions.
