Israeli Health Ministry Warns Against Consuming Algimal Tahini Due to Salmonella Contamination
The Israeli Ministry of Health has issued a public warning against consuming tahini products from the Algimal brand following the detection of Salmonella bacteria. Routine inspections and sampling conducted by the Ministry's Food Service found Salmonella in two specific products: a 1-kilogram package of premium white sesame tahini produced in March 2026 with a best-before date of March 2027, and a 500-gram package produced in April 2026 with a best-before date of April 2027. Consumers are advised not to consume these products.
Salmonella infection can cause symptoms such as fever, diarrhea (sometimes bloody), nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. In rare cases, complications may arise, especially among vulnerable groups including young children, immunocompromised individuals, and the elderly, where the infection can lead to severe illness or even death. Additionally, the Ministry's investigation revealed that these tahini products were imported into Israel illegally, without proper approvals, and were produced under unknown conditions.
