Israel Renames Highway 443 to Honor Late Minister David Levy

The Israeli government approved a proposal by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Transportation Minister Miri Regev to rename a section of Highway 443 as "Derech HaLeviim" in memory of the late Minister David Levy. The designated stretch runs between the Ben Shemen interchange and the Beitunia/Givat Ze'ev junction. This renaming commemorates Levy's extensive public service, including roles as Deputy Prime Minister, Foreign Minister, Housing Minister, Immigration and Absorption Minister, and longtime Knesset member. Levy was recognized for his efforts to promote social equality, strengthen peripheral regions, and reduce societal gaps in Israel.

The name "Derech HaLeviim" also reflects the historical and cultural connection of the area to the Levite tribe and the priestly class, as well as its association with the Hasmonean family in the Modiin region. Highway 443 is a vital transportation artery linking Jerusalem, Modiin, Judea and Samaria, the Shephelah, and central Israel, serving hundreds of thousands of drivers daily.

Following the government's decision, the Ministry of Transportation and Road Safety, in cooperation with the Ministry of Defense, will update road signage accordingly. The government secretariat will publish the new name officially. Prime Minister Netanyahu praised Levy as a dedicated public servant who rose from his hometown of Beit She'an to national leadership, emphasizing his commitment to social causes and representing Israel internationally. Minister Regev highlighted Levy's leadership and lifelong dedication to national unity, social justice, and peripheral development, stating that naming a major transport route after him is a fitting tribute that will preserve his legacy for future generations.
