IDF Considers Removing Checkpoint on Route 443 from Modi'in to Jerusalem to Ease Traffic
The IDF's Central Command has been examining the possibility of removing the checkpoint on Route 443 near Ofer Camp, in the direction from Modi'in to Jerusalem. This checkpoint currently processes thousands of vehicles daily and causes significant traffic congestion. The review is partly motivated by the fact that Palestinian vehicles from nearby villages do not have access to this road segment in the relevant direction, reducing the checkpoint's necessity.
In recent weeks, a joint task force including Central Command officials, police, and local leaders from Judea, Samaria, and Jerusalem has been assessing the situation. The goal is to either change the checkpoint's operation or eliminate it altogether. However, even if the checkpoint is removed, some form of security presence might remain, potentially replaced by technological measures to prevent unauthorized Palestinian pedestrian access to vehicles entering Israel.
The proposed changes apply only to the Modi'in-to-Jerusalem direction, with no current plans to alter the opposite direction. The IDF emphasized that the process is still in an initial evaluation phase, and no final decision has been made. If implemented, the removal could reduce daily traffic jams and decrease the need for dozens of soldiers currently manning the checkpoint.
