Israeli Police Use Undercover Passenger to Bust Five Illegal Ride-Share Drivers in East Jerusalem

Israeli police conducted an undercover operation near the Shuafat checkpoint in East Jerusalem, resulting in five drivers being summoned to court for operating unlicensed paid transportation services. The drivers, all residents of East Jerusalem, were caught transporting passengers for payment without the required licenses or proper insurance. During the operation, an undercover passenger posed as a regular customer and boarded private vehicles offering rides in the area. The drivers were recorded collecting fares, which police say constitutes illegal ride-sharing without a taxi or transportation license and without the mandated insurance coverage.

The five suspects were detained by the Jerusalem Traffic Division and are now facing further investigation. Following the conclusion of the inquiry, they received summonses to appear in court. Eli Matlov, commander of the Jerusalem Traffic Division, emphasized the seriousness of operating illegal transportation services, noting the risks to passenger safety and the lack of proper insurance coverage in such cases. He stated that the police will continue to use all available means to identify and prosecute offenders to protect public safety and road users.
