Israeli Police Use Undercover Passenger to Expose Illegal Ride-Share Drivers in Jerusalem
The Jerusalem District Traffic Unit recently conducted a covert operation targeting unlicensed ride-share drivers operating illegally in the Shuafat area. An undercover passenger posed as a regular customer and boarded private vehicles offering paid rides without the required permits or proper licenses. During these rides, the drivers were recorded collecting payments, violating laws that mandate specific licensing and insurance for commercial passenger transport.
As a result of the investigation, five suspects from East Jerusalem were detained by the Jerusalem District Anti-Crime Unit and subsequently summoned to court for legal proceedings. Police emphasized the dangers of unlicensed ride-sharing, noting that passengers in such vehicles may lack adequate insurance coverage, posing safety risks.
Eli Matlov, commander of the Anti-Crime Unit, stated, "The Israel Police take the operation of illegal ride services very seriously. Beyond breaking the law, unlicensed passenger transport endangers the public." The police pledged to continue rigorous enforcement efforts to uphold public safety and road user security.
