WhatsApp Expands Full Chat Management Features on Wear OS Smartwatches

WhatsApp is enhancing its user experience beyond smartphones by launching new features for smartwatches running Google's Wear OS. The update aims to make managing conversations directly from the wrist more convenient and advanced. Previously, WhatsApp on smartwatches mainly allowed users to read messages, reply via text or voice, and perform basic actions. Now, users can open new chats directly from their watch without needing to access their phone.

Additional management options include marking messages as read, pinning important chats to the top, archiving conversations, and muting chats or groups. These new capabilities give users greater control over their messaging environment and enable quick daily actions, especially when taking out the phone is inconvenient or unnecessary. This transforms the smartwatch from a device primarily for notifications and brief replies into one that supports full and comfortable chat management.

This update is part of WhatsApp's broader effort to strengthen its presence on wearable devices. The Wear OS app leverages WhatsApp's multi-device functionality and maintains end-to-end encryption even when used on linked devices. The new features are being rolled out gradually, with availability depending on app version, country, and watch model. Currently, they are exclusive to Wear OS devices, but WhatsApp plans to expand smartwatch app capabilities to other platforms in the future.
