In Connecticut, a routine afternoon nearly turned tragic for the Tzara family during Fourth of July preparations when a black bear suddenly charged at their 6-year-old son in their yard. Jeffrey Tzara, the boy's father, described hearing an unusual, fierce bark unlike anything from their dog Bella before the bear appeared. Security cameras captured the bear sprinting directly toward the child, who began retreating in fear.

Without hesitation, Bella, a mixed Husky family dog, ran across the yard and positioned herself firmly between the bear and the boy.
