US Launches Extensive Strikes on Iran After Attacks in Strait of Hormuz
The United States military initiated a broad wave of airstrikes against Iranian targets overnight following a series of Iranian attacks on commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz. CENTCOM announced that over 80 targets were hit, including air defense systems, command and control networks, radar sites, missile launch capabilities, and more than 60 small boats of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards near the Strait and surrounding areas. The strikes were described by a senior US official as "punishment, not proportional," and a direct response to Iran's violation of a ceasefire agreement.
Iran reported explosions in the port cities of Sirik, Bandar Abbas, on Qeshm Island, and the Kharg oil island. Iranian media also noted blasts in Bahrain near the US Fifth Fleet headquarters and the Sheikh Isa Air Base. Iran's emergency military command accused the US of blatant aggression and vowed a "crushing response". The Revolutionary Guards claimed an initial retaliatory operation involving missile and drone strikes on 85 US military sites in Bandar Salman, Bahrain, and Ali Al-Salem base in Kuwait.
Mohsen Rezaei, military advisor to Iran's Supreme Leader, condemned the US actions, accusing Washington of sabotaging negotiations and attempting to control maritime routes in the Gulf of Oman. He urged patience among opponents of talks and threatened retribution against former US President Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu.
In parallel, the US Treasury reinstated sanctions on Iranian oil, citing Iran's unacceptable actions in the Strait of Hormuz. The US emphasized its commitment to a final agreement but condemned Iran's recent provocations. Iran's Foreign Ministry responded coolly, warning that vessels using unauthorized routes face risks and asserting Iran's compliance with the memorandum of understanding governing the Strait's navigation.
