US Launches Military Strikes on Iran Following Attacks on Commercial Ships Near Strait of Hormuz

On Wednesday, multiple explosions were reported in Bushehr, a city in southern Iran, though details about the cause or damage remain unclear. Iranian news agency Mehr confirmed the explosions but denied rumors of blasts on Kharg Island. These events come amid escalating tensions after the United States launched a military offensive against Iran overnight. The US strikes were a direct response to a series of Iranian attacks on three commercial tankers in the Gulf of Oman near the strategic Strait of Hormuz.

Earlier on Wednesday, Washington announced it was revoking sanctions relief on Iranian oil sales, a key element of prior agreements, aiming to punish Tehran for the attacks and increase economic pressure. The US Central Command stated that the strikes were intended to impose a heavy cost on Iran for its "unjustified, dangerous aggression" against civilian commercial vessels in an international shipping lane, which it described as a clear violation of a ceasefire.

NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg publicly supported the US military action, calling it "absolutely necessary." Meanwhile, air raid sirens sounded again in Bahrain, reflecting heightened regional tensions as Iran threatened further attacks on American bases in the area if the military operations continue.
