US Launches New Strikes on Iranian Military Targets After Strait of Hormuz Attacks
Following Iranian attacks on commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz, the United States conducted renewed military strikes against multiple Iranian military targets overnight on June 27. The US Central Command (CENTCOM) announced the operations were ordered by the top commander in response to Iran's continued aggression against commercial shipping in the strategic waterway.
The escalation began after Iran targeted a ship on Friday, prompting US retaliatory strikes. Despite an opportunity to honor a ceasefire agreement, Iran launched a one-way drone attack early Sunday morning at 4:30 AM Eastern Time against the Panama-flagged oil tanker M/T Kiku, which was carrying over two million barrels of crude oil near the Strait of Hormuz.
In response, US forces targeted Iranian military infrastructure including surveillance facilities, communication systems, air defense sites, drone storage, and mine-laying capabilities. CENTCOM emphasized that commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz continues uninterrupted, while US forces remain vigilant and prepared to respond to further threats.
This latest round of strikes underscores the ongoing tensions between the US and Iran over maritime security in a critical global oil transit route.
