Israeli Court Sentences Man to 26 Years for Fatal Beating with Wooden Plank

The Haifa District Court sentenced Elhayin Warko to 26 years in prison for the intentional murder of 28-year-old Mousa Ismail Abakar in September 2021. Warko was found guilty of leading a brutal attack in which he struck Abakar on the head from behind with a wooden plank and continued to beat him after he fell to the ground. The assault involved three other attackers who kicked and threw stones at Abakar and his friends. Abakar, who had come to Israel to support his family, died from his severe injuries, leaving behind parents and siblings.

The original indictment named four suspects. While Warko’s case proceeded to a full trial resulting in a murder conviction, the other three defendants accepted plea deals. Ejajom Yo Tespai was convicted of aiding murder and sentenced to eight years, and Belta Basha and Gesau Mengsto were convicted of reckless murder and each received 18-year sentences.

In addition to the prison term, Warko was ordered to pay 258,000 shekels in compensation. The prosecution emphasized the gravity of the crime and its impact on public safety and the sanctity of life. The court acknowledged the severity but ruled that the circumstances did not warrant a life sentence, settling on 26 years imprisonment.
