Family of Haifa Teen Shot Dead Donates His Organs Amid Rising Violence Concerns
The family of 17-year-old Wiam Faisal, who was fatally shot last week in a convenience store in Haifa, has decided to donate his organs following his death at Rambam Hospital. Wiam was critically wounded in a shooting incident on the night between Wednesday and Thursday near Sderot HaHagana, which also claimed the life of 18-year-old Jonathan Houri and left others injured. His uncle, attorney Sami Faisal, described the attack as sudden and unprovoked, with Wiam playing on his phone when a white vehicle arrived and opened fire on a group of young men. Four youths were hit, with one dying instantly, Wiam succumbing to his injuries two days later, and another in critical condition.
The family vehemently denies reports linking Wiam to any criminal activity or conflicts, emphasizing he was an innocent victim. His father, Osama Faisal, highlighted Wiam's generous nature and the family's wish to save lives through organ donation. Wiam's grandmother, who raised him from age nine, recalled his kindness and the respect he earned from friends and community members. His brother Majd and uncle Sami both stressed that Wiam was not involved in crime and was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time.
Sami Faisal criticized the police response to the ongoing surge in violence within the Arab community, where 151 people have been killed this year alone. He expressed fear for public safety, noting that even teenagers as young as 15 or 16 are now armed, creating a climate of fear for families. "The police could do much better," he said, urging improved action to reduce the number of murders. The family and friends mourn a young man remembered for his integrity and willingness to help others, lamenting the tragic loss and the broader issue of escalating violence in Haifa and beyond.
