Two Men Fatally Shot in Haifa and Reineh Amid Escalating Violence Wave
A surge in violent crime continues in northern Israel, with two fatal shootings occurring overnight between Wednesday and Thursday. Jonathan Khouri, an 18-year-old, was shot dead at a convenience store on Sderot HaHagana at Haifa’s city entrance, where two others were seriously wounded. Emergency teams confirmed Khouri’s death at the scene and evacuated the injured to Rambam Hospital. Another victim with minor injuries arrived independently at the hospital. Police have launched an investigation, treating the incident as criminal, with no arrests reported yet.
Hours later, around 3:23 a.m., 30-year-old Mohammad Zidan was shot dead in Reineh near Nazareth. Paramedics found him unconscious with severe penetrating wounds and declared him dead at the scene. Police are investigating this case as well, with the victim’s identity initially unconfirmed and the motive deemed criminal.
These killings follow a recent spike in violence across the region. Earlier on Wednesday, 24-year-old bus driver Suad was shot dead in Shfaram, and 21-year-old Kamel Abu Kalib was killed in a shopping area in Yagur. Additionally, a 75-year-old yeshiva head, Amos Gueta, was fatally stabbed in Netanya by a mentally unstable individual. On Tuesday, a known criminal affiliated with the Hariri crime organization, Rabie Abu Haikal, died in a car explosion in Haifa’s Kiryat Haim neighborhood.
In response to the escalating violence, Israel Police Commissioner Major General Dany Levi convened an emergency meeting and vowed uncompromising action against organized crime, particularly within Arab communities. He ordered intensified weekend police activity and a broad arrest campaign targeting crime figures nationwide. The Haifa and Carmel district police commanders are leading the ongoing investigations into the recent shootings.
