WhatsApp Tests New Green Dot Indicator for Active Users on iOS Beta
WhatsApp has begun a phased rollout of a new feature in its iOS beta version that visually indicates when contacts are active. Instead of showing connection status through text, the app now displays a small green dot on the profile picture of users currently active in the app. This change aims to provide a quicker and simpler way for users to see who is online at a glance without opening the chat details.
Previously, WhatsApp relied on text status in the contact details area to show activity. The new approach replaces this with a more prominent graphic element, the green dot, appearing directly on the profile image of connected users. Currently, this feature is available only to some users in the WhatsApp iOS beta via TestFlight and is limited to the chat details screen, not the entire app such as the chat list.
The feature respects existing privacy settings; users who hide their "online" status will not show the green dot. WhatsApp is continuing to develop additional options to display user availability more clearly and centrally within the app. This update is part of a broader effort to enhance the visibility and accessibility of activity status. No official release date for the stable version has been announced yet, as the feature remains in testing and gradual deployment stages.
