Mercedes Expands Into German Defense Drone Systems While Launching Luxurious CLA Model in Israel
In early June, Mercedes signed a memorandum of understanding to supply unique vehicles equipped with drone interception systems to the German Ministry of Defense. Unlike previous contracts for armored S-Class limousines or luxury SUVs, this deal involves outfitting G-Class and Sprinter vehicles with advanced mobile counter-drone technologies. This move reflects Mercedes' strategic expansion into the defense sector amid challenges in the German automotive industry and increased government defense budgets due to ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and regional tensions in the Gulf.
Meanwhile, Mercedes continues to promote its luxury passenger cars, recently introducing the new CLA model in Israel. The latest CLA retains the coupe-like design of its predecessor but features a more premium and aggressive exterior, including a trapezoidal grille and sleek headlights. Interior space has improved with a 6 cm longer wheelbase and redesigned door-to-roof ratios, allowing easier access and better seating comfort, although rear headroom remains somewhat limited.
The cabin exudes luxury with high-quality materials, advanced lighting, and a large elliptical dashboard housing up to three wide screens, including a 14-inch OLED central display. The CLA 200 model tested comes with a 1.5-liter turbocharged gasoline engine paired with a mild hybrid system, delivering 163 horsepower plus an additional 30 from the electric motor. It offers responsive acceleration, smooth handling, and fuel efficiency close to the claimed 18.8 km/l under gentle driving.
Pricing in Israel starts at about 320,000 shekels for the base CLA 180, with the CLA 200 ranging from 340,000 to 400,000 shekels depending on options. While the CLA is a refined and pleasant vehicle, some competitors provide better value for money. Nevertheless, Mercedes maintains its status as a luxury brand and social status symbol, akin to coveted luxury watches that command long waiting times.
Other premium competitors in Israel include the BMW 220i Gran Coupe priced at 325,000 shekels with a 1.5-liter turbo engine producing 156 hp, and the Audi A5 TFSI40 at 363,000 shekels featuring a 2.0-liter turbo engine with mild hybrid assistance and 204 hp. Both offer spacious interiors and advanced technology, providing alternatives in the luxury compact segment.
Summary: Mercedes is expanding into defense by supplying drone interception systems on G-Class and Sprinter vehicles to Germany's Ministry of Defense, while also launching the upscale CLA model in Israel. The CLA offers a luxurious design, improved interior space, and hybrid powertrains, priced between 320,000 and 400,000 shekels. Despite strong competition, Mercedes retains its luxury appeal and status symbol value.
