Rabbi Amos Guetta Remembered as Devoted Scholar and Compassionate Leader
Rabbi Ariel Levy bid farewell to Rabbi Amos Guetta, who was brutally murdered, describing him as a devoted Torah scholar, a devout servant of God, and a true lover of the Jewish people. Rabbi Guetta dedicated his life to Torah study, prayer, hospitality, and strengthening every Jew regardless of background. He lived a life of exceptional holiness, fully committed to divine service, often studying Torah with tefillin on throughout the day and meticulously observing mitzvot such as tzitzit. He spent entire weeks in yeshiva, sleeping only on a chair.
His prayer was profound and heartfelt, standing for hours in complete detachment from worldly distractions, embodying deep devotion and humility. Above all, Rabbi Guetta was known for his extraordinary love for every Jew, offering hope and comfort to those struggling or marginalized. Every Jew felt welcomed by him, as he believed in their divine essence and never gave up on anyone.
Rabbi Guetta was also renowned for his hospitality, personally preparing food for guests with great humility. For many years, he made annual pilgrimages to Hebron on Yom Kippur, even during difficult times when few dared to visit. Despite severe health challenges in his final year, he insisted on coming to Hebron, arriving with medical support to pray for hours with intense devotion.
After the tragic massacre on Simchat Torah 5784, Rabbi Guetta expressed deep pain, saying, "They sold us out." He soon fell ill and endured great suffering until his passing. His life exemplified selflessness and a boundless commitment to helping broken hearts and uplifting the downtrodden. Rabbi Levy expressed hope that others might learn from Rabbi Guetta’s example of loving every Jew wholeheartedly, regardless of differences, as this love embodies the essence of the Torah.
