Former Israeli Supreme Court Justice Edna Arbel Dies at 82
Edna Arbel, a prominent figure in Israeli law and former Supreme Court justice, passed away at the age of 82. Arbel had a distinguished legal career, including serving as Israel's Attorney General and a decade-long tenure on the Supreme Court. The judiciary announced her death with condolences extended by Supreme Court President Isaac Amit and other senior judicial officials, noting the family's mourning.
Arbel began her career in 1972 at the Central District Prosecutor's Office, eventually becoming district attorney. She played key roles in major cases such as the Bus Line 300 affair and assisted the Cohen Committee investigating the Sabra and Shatila events. After eight years as a Tel Aviv District Court judge, she was appointed Israel's eighth Attorney General in 1996.
As Attorney General, Arbel took a firm stance against governmental corruption, overseeing significant investigations involving high-profile public figures including Ariel Sharon (Greek island affair), Benjamin Netanyahu (Amadi case), Yaakov Neeman, and Ehud Olmert. In 2004, she was appointed to the Supreme Court, where she served until retiring at age 70 in 2012. Her funeral arrangements will be announced later.
