Former Israeli Supreme Court Justice and State Attorney Edna Arbel Dies at 82
Edna Arbel, former Supreme Court Justice and Israel's eighth State Attorney, passed away at the age of 82. Born in Jerusalem, Arbel graduated from law school in 1967 and joined the Central District Prosecutor's Office in 1972. She played a key role in significant investigations, including the Cohen Committee on the Sabra and Shatila events and the Attorney General's report on the Bus 300 affair.
In 1984, Arbel was appointed Central District Attorney, and in 1988 she became a judge at the Tel Aviv District Court. She was appointed State Attorney in 1996, where she led complex criminal investigations involving public officials and senior figures for eight years. In 2004, Arbel was appointed to the Supreme Court, serving for ten years until her retirement in 2014 at age 70.
Throughout her judicial career, Arbel focused on criminal law, women's rights, juvenile protection, and detention laws. After retiring, she continued public service, chairing the Advisory Committee on Criminal Procedure and Evidence from 2012. Arbel was widowed and is survived by three children. Her legacy is honored for her decades of service to Israel's legal system.
