Former Israeli Footballer Liron Basis Freed in Germany Amid Massive Fraud Investigation
Two years after his arrest by Interpol in Russia on suspicion of a massive fraud involving hundreds of millions of euros, former Israeli footballer Liron Basis is no longer in Moscow but has relocated to Germany. He is currently free within Germany, although he is prohibited from working and must remain within the country’s borders while the investigation continues.
Basis was initially detained in Russia on allegations of fraud causing damages estimated at 1.5 billion shekels. International arrest warrants were issued by Interpol and Europol at Germany’s request. However, about a year and a half after the case broke, Basis reached an agreement with Russian authorities to transfer the legal proceedings to Germany. Since then, he has been living freely in Germany under legal restrictions, including the confiscation of his passport and a ban on employment.
Despite the serious charges, Basis has not been interrogated even once by German police in the past six months, as authorities continue gathering evidence. His legal team suggests this lack of interrogation indicates the case may weaken and possibly end without charges. Basis is represented by attorney Philipp German, who confirmed that the arrest warrant was initially issued by the Dresden prosecutor’s office and enforced in Moscow, but later lifted by Russian authorities.
Liron Basis is best known in Israeli football for his time with Hapoel Haifa during their championship season in 1999, alongside coach Eli Gutman and star Giovanni Russo. He played 16 seasons across several clubs including Maccabi Haifa, Maccabi Tel Aviv, Beitar Jerusalem, and Hapoel Be’er Sheva before retiring in 2008 at Maccabi Amishav Petah Tikva. The ongoing investigation continues to cast a shadow over his post-football life.
