Former Israeli Footballer Liron Basis Moves to Germany Amid Massive Fraud Investigation
Two years after his arrest by Interpol on suspicion of a massive fraud involving hundreds of millions of euros, former Israeli footballer Liron Basis is no longer in Moscow but has relocated to Germany. Basis, who was initially detained in Russia on allegations of fraud causing damages estimated at 1.5 billion shekels, reached a legal agreement about a year and a half ago to transfer his case to Germany. Under this arrangement, he is free within Germany but prohibited from working or leaving the country until the investigation concludes.
Since moving to Germany about six months ago, Basis has not been interrogated even once, with German police still gathering evidence. His lawyer manages the legal proceedings, and family members have been able to visit him, marking a significant change from his previous detention conditions in Russia. Despite the restrictions on his passport and employment, sources close to Basis suggest the lack of interrogation indicates the case may weaken and potentially end without charges.
Basis was arrested in Russia following international arrest warrants issued by Interpol and Europol at Germany's request. His lawyer, Philipp German, stated that Basis was detained based on a warrant from the Dresden prosecutor's office but was released after several days in custody. The allegations relate to fraud connected to a securities broker operating a call center.
As a footballer, Basis is best remembered for his championship season with Hapoel Haifa in 1999, alongside coach Eli Gutman and star Giovanni Russo. He played 16 seasons across several Israeli clubs, including Maccabi Haifa, Maccabi Tel Aviv, Beitar Jerusalem, and Hapoel Be'er Sheva, retiring in 2008 with Maccabi Amishav Petah Tikva. The ongoing legal saga continues to overshadow his post-football life.
