Maccabi Tel Aviv Aims for More Aggressive Play Under Steven Vanharan Ahead of New Season
Maccabi Tel Aviv arrived in Serbia on Sunday to begin their training camp at the Serbian Football Association's national team facility near Belgrade as they prepare for the 2026/27 season. Brazilian defender Heitor did not travel with the team, as the club is seeking to transfer him. Two options are on the table: a direct sale for around one million euros or a loan with a purchase option at the end of the season.
Steven Vanharan, the club's sporting director, has decided to overhaul Maccabi Tel Aviv's defensive approach following a thorough review of last season's performances. He concluded that the team must become "meaner," more aggressive, and combative. This philosophy is driving the search for a new left-footed defender who is more aggressive and uncompromising to replace Heitor.
Vanharan's desire for a tougher team also explains his interest in acquiring defensive midfielder Dan Glazer from Kairat. Although Glazer may not be the most technical or creative midfielder, his defensive qualities align with the new team ethos. Maccabi Tel Aviv is currently awaiting a transfer fee proposal from Kairat, expected soon, and if the amount is reasonable, they aim to sign Glazer to a two-year contract. Glazer also has offers from Beitar Jerusalem and Maccabi Netanya, but Maccabi Tel Aviv hopes to finalize the deal quickly so he can join the training camp.
Looking ahead, Maccabi Tel Aviv will face Hapoel Be'er Sheva in the "Champion of Champions" match on July 16. A week later, they will begin their European campaign in the UEFA Europa League qualifiers against the winner of the two-legged tie between Sheriff Tiraspol (Moldova) and Olimpija Ljubljana (Slovenia), with matches scheduled for July 23 and 30.
