IDF and Shin Bet confirm killing of Hamas commander Walid Haniyeh
The IDF and Shin Bet said they killed Walid Haniyeh, the deputy commander of a Nukhba company in Hamas’s military wing, in an operation carried out two days earlier on Thursday. The announcement confirmed Arabic reports from last week that he had been eliminated.
According to the military, Haniyeh had recently been trying to recruit new terrorists into the organization and had been leading theoretical training for the Nukhba company under his command. The IDF said he also commanded a terrorist squad that raided Israeli territory on October 7, 2023, and crossed into Israel himself.
The military added that Haniyeh was involved in directing and passing instructions to the squad while it abducted Israeli civilians into the Gaza Strip. He was the nephew of Ismail Haniyeh, the former head of Hamas’s political bureau.
