Thousands of residents and visitors crowded Ubly City Park in Michigan over the weekend for the centerpiece of the town’s 130th anniversary celebrations, a tractor-pulling competition. Despite stormy weather and intense heat, the event drew big crowds and was staged under the theme “Celebrate America,” with a salute to the approaching 250th anniversary of U.S. independence.
Tractor pulling is described as one of the wildest motorsports in the world. Competitors try to drag a giant 30-ton sled as far as possible, while the sled digs deeper into the ground and makes every extra inch harder to win. The contest pits machines with tens of thousands of horsepower against the resistance of the earth itself.
The most intense scenes came early in the week, when the track filled with modified trucks and tractors, along with loud “burn out” displays on the main streets. The event also served as a family fair, with a children’s parade, a main parade on Sunday, and displays of classic motorcycles, cars and tractors.
Organizers from Ubly Rotary and the Lions Club said the festival was not only about mechanical power, but also about raising donations for local families and creating lasting memories for residents. The article says Ubly delivered on both the spectacle and the community celebration.
