Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz is only possible on routes designated by Tehran. In a statement, it called a newly announced route, created without coordination with Iran, unacceptable and a safety risk.
The Guard Corps also warned that it would take action against vessels that do not comply with its requirements. The statement did not provide further details about the new route, who announced it, or what form any enforcement might take.
The warning comes amid heightened sensitivity over traffic through the narrow waterway, one of the world’s most important shipping lanes. The IRGC presented Iran as the authority that can determine which passages are safe and authorized.
