Southern District commander Brig. Gen. Amir Klein visited the family of Sgt. Maj. Itamar Alos, who died on January 3, and handed his widow, Esther, and his parents, Margalit and Shlomo, the personal pistol he used in the fighting on October 7 in Ofakim.
Along with the weapon, the police gave the bereaved family an official memorial cushion bearing the symbols and decorations Alos earned during his long service in the force. Police said Alos acted on the morning of the Hamas attack out of a deep sense of duty, first getting his family into a protected room when the sirens and gunfire began, then immediately heading to multiple battle sites in the city.
According to the police account, Alos spent hours engaging terrorists at close range, rescuing trapped residents, treating wounded people on scene, evacuating casualties to hospitals and neutralizing attackers, all at direct personal risk. His actions, they said, helped prevent further losses and became part of the community’s stories of heroism from that day.
Klein said, “The Israel Police embraced the family and will continue to accompany, hug and strengthen it.” He added that Alos was not only brave but also “values-driven, dedicated and full of love for people,” choosing at the critical moment to run toward danger to save others. Klein said Alos left behind a legacy of courage, giving and responsibility that will continue to guide police service and inspire future officers and fighters.
