A moving ceremony was held Monday night at the home of the Alos family in Ofakim, where Negev District Commander Brig. Gen. Amir Klein came to hand over the personal weapon of Chief Superintendent Itamar Alos, who fought in the October 7 battles to stop the Hamas attack. The weapon had been carried by Alos during the deadly fighting in Ofakim. Klein also brought the family an official memorial cushion decorated with symbols honoring Alos’s service in the Israel Police.
Alos served as a dispatcher at the Netivot police station. On the morning of October 7, after hearing gunfire in Ofakim, he left home armed with his personal pistol and ran into the danger zone to save lives. Police said his actions helped save many people and contributed to stopping the massacre in the city.
Alos died in January after a prolonged hospitalization for medical reasons. He was survived by his widow, Esther, and his parents, Margalit and Shlomo, who received the weapon from Klein. The commander told the family, “Israel Police embraced the family and will continue to accompany, hug and strengthen it,” and added that Alos was “not only a brave policeman, but a principled, devoted man with a love of people.”
Klein said Alos’s conduct on “that black Saturday” left a deep mark on Ofakim and on all Israelis. “We will not memorialize him only in ceremonies,” he said, “but in the way we continue to serve the public and act according to the values he believed in.” Police also said Alos would be remembered as a model of courage, values and initiative, and that the southern district will keep supporting families of the fallen.
