IDF Chief Remembers Fallen Nahal Commanders and Their Legacy of Courage and Humility
IDF Chief of Staff Aviv Kochavi spoke at a memorial ceremony honoring fallen Nahal Brigade soldiers, focusing on two senior commanders killed on October 7: Colonel Yonatan Steinberg and Lieutenant Colonel Yonatan Bernstein. Kochavi highlighted Steinberg's words about the complementary nature of courage and humility, calling humility the source of true strength. He recalled how both commanders led their troops bravely and humbly against Hamas militants during the October 7 attacks, ultimately sacrificing their lives fulfilling their mission.
Kochavi reflected on the meaning of living a full life, citing Jewish teachings that describe a person who "comes in days" as one who lives each day with purpose and dedication. Although Steinberg and Bernstein died at the peak of their lives, they embodied this ideal through their deep sense of mission, responsibility, camaraderie, and love for Israel. Their spirit continues to guide the Nahal Brigade, which rose from tragedy to carry out its duties with the same bravery and humility.
He also shared a message from Steinberg's widow, Yiska, who told their children after his death, "We were people of faith, and we will become greater people of faith." Kochavi said he carries these words as a compass for the entire brigade, emphasizing that faith and trust are intertwined. The deep faith in the justness of their cause draws strength from the trust Israeli citizens place in the military, which must be worthy of this trust while fulfilling its responsibility to ensure Israel's security.
