The Israeli military (IDF) and the Shin Bet security agency revealed on Friday that Ez al-Din Bik, a senior Hamas operative killed this week in Gaza, was responsible for holding Israeli hostages during the war. Bik commanded Hamas's Northern Gaza Brigade and, in that capacity, oversaw the captivity of numerous Israelis. Prior to leading the brigade during the 'Swords of Iron' war, Bik held various positions, including commander of the Jabalia West battalion and head of military intelligence for the Northern Brigade. He was involved in numerous attacks against Israeli civilians and was a founder of Hamas's Nukhba commando force in northern Gaza. Bik also actively participated in the October 7th massacre in the Gaza border region.

During the war, in his role as the commander responsible for northern Gaza, Bik was in charge of holding many hostages. The announcement listed several hostages, including Mia Shem, Hisham Assaid, Amit Buskila (may she rest in peace), Uriel Baruch (may he rest in peace), Private First Class Nick Beizer (may he rest in peace), Sergeant Ron Sherman (may he rest in peace), Elia Toledano (may he rest in peace), Shani Louk (may she rest in peace), Michel Nisenbaum (may she rest in peace), Sergeant First Class Tamir Nimrodi (may he rest in peace), Yitzhak Gelerenter (may he rest in peace), Eitan Levy (may he rest in peace), Hanan Yablonka (may he rest in peace), Ron Benjamin (may he rest in peace), and Orion Hernandez (may he rest in peace).

A joint statement from the IDF and Shin Bet declared, "The elimination of the terrorist Ez al-Din Bik constitutes an important closing of a circle for the IDF and Shin Bet, who will continue to operate forcefully against the terrorists who took part in the October 7th massacre."
