Flydubai Captain Hailed Hero After Foiling Hijacking Attempt

Captain Smith Machchar of Flydubai, who recently thwarted a hijacking attempt with the help of Israeli passengers, is described by colleagues as a calm, grounded, and experienced pilot. Machchar, who lives in Dubai with his family, has nearly two decades of flying experience, including navigating challenging airports and handling medical emergencies, such as a mid-flight childbirth. Despite his extensive career, flying was not his initial ambition; he studied textile engineering and management, intending to join his family's textile business. A 19-year-old aviation seminar sparked his passion for flying, leading him to a career that began with the Indian low-cost carrier Spice Jet.

During the recent incident, Machchar physically confronted the hijacker and, with assistance from passengers, managed to prevent the plane from crashing. He opened the cockpit door to call for help, a move that ultimately led to the hijacker being subdued. Colleagues told the Wall Street Journal that Machchar is known for his pleasant demeanor, humility, and respectful treatment of junior pilots.

In a podcast interview last year, Machchar shared his approach to flying, emphasizing his focus on maintaining alertness and monitoring the aircraft, which he believes is a pilot's primary duty. He also recounted a past emergency where the crew had to decide within minutes whether to divert the flight due to a passenger going into labor, ultimately welcoming a "baby on board."
