President Donald Trump said Iran has agreed to the highest level of nuclear inspections for the long term. He said any unfrozen funds would be held in a U.S. trust account and could be spent only on American food and medical supplies, including corn, wheat and soybeans.
Trump also said that, because of the agreement, he approved keeping the Strait of Hormuz open without a naval blockade. At the same time, he said ships would remain positioned there in case they are needed.
Iran quickly rejected his account. A spokesman for the Iranian foreign ministry said there is no plan for inspectors to visit the damaged nuclear sites, and that Iran itself will decide how to use the money without restrictions.
