U.S. President Donald Trump rejected Iranian claims on Tuesday that Tehran had not agreed to allow inspectors from the International Atomic Energy Agency, or IAEA, into its nuclear sites as part of talks held two days earlier in Switzerland. In a post on Truth Social, Trump said Iran was lying and warned that the talks would have ended if Tehran had refused.
“Despite their protests and their fake statements to the contrary, together with the drums of war of the fake news, doing everything they can to make the United States Victory look as small and insignificant as possible, Iran has agreed to a complete and total Nuclear Inspection, long-term, and perpetual. This will ensure Nuclear Integrity. If they do not comply, no further negotiations!” Trump wrote.
He added that, based on that promise and other major concessions by Iran, he agreed to keep the Strait of Hormuz open without any new naval blockade. Trump said U.S. ships remain in place in case the blockade has to be restored, though he called that unlikely. He also said any money or sanctions relief released by the Treasury would go into an escrow account controlled by the United States and be used only to buy food and medical supplies from the U.S., including corn, wheat and soybeans.
Trump said Iran needs the aid urgently and described the situation as a humanitarian crisis. He ended by saying, “The talks are going well!” The remarks followed his administration’s decision on Monday to grant Iran, for the first time in decades, a temporary waiver from oil sanctions, after the reported commitment to resume cooperation with IAEA inspectors who had been barred from nuclear sites since those facilities were attacked in the first Iran war in June last year.
