President Donald Trump caused an immediate shakeup in Michigan’s Republican governor primary after endorsing John James. Trump said James was a “patriot of America First” and gave him his “full and total endorsement,” adding that James “will not disappoint you.”
Shortly after the announcement, state Senator Eric Nesbitt dropped out of the race and backed James. Nesbitt said he was pausing his campaign and joining Trump in support of James, arguing that “divisive primaries only help Democrats” and that it was time to unite.
James welcomed the move, saying Nesbitt “did exactly what a true conservative from Michigan should do” by rallying behind Trump and his campaign.
Not everyone in the race accepted the endorsement quietly. Businessman Perry Johnson said Trump had received “bad advice” and noted that James had already lost twice in statewide races. Former Michigan attorney general Mike Cox, also running, said he expected to become “the president’s preferred governor” after winning the election.
