A taxi driver in Wuhan, in China’s Hubei province, has been widely praised after helping save the life of a 3-year-old girl known as Yanyan, who lost consciousness after developing a high fever. Her family initially called an ambulance, but were told it would take at least 20 minutes because of traffic congestion.
The family then stopped a taxi driven by Wang Tao. After hearing what was happening, Wang rushed toward the hospital, running red lights and at times driving the wrong way on the road. He also contacted traffic police during the trip and asked for help clearing the way.
When traffic near the hospital brought the taxi to a complete stop, Wang told the family, “Give me the child, I run faster than you.” He carried Yanyan in his arms toward the emergency room, with help from an electric bike rider along the way. Reports said less than 30 minutes passed between the first symptoms and her arrival for medical treatment.
After treatment, the girl was declared out of danger. The family tried several times to give Wang a cash reward, but he refused, saying, “Helping someone in a crisis is a natural thing.”
