An American fighter pilot rescued after his F-15 was shot down over Iran during the April war told intelligence officials he saw an unusual Iranian drone formation moments before abandoning the jet. According to CNN, he described multiple Iranian drones operating in tight coordination in a shape that reminded him of a jellyfish, a report that has sparked debate inside the U.S. intelligence community.
The pilot said he saw several large drones apparently linked together, with smaller drones moving beneath them. Another official quoted in the report said he called it an airborne "minefield of drones." Investigators have not yet determined the exact reason the F-15 was brought down, but some reports suggest the drone formation may have been involved.
There were two crew members in the aircraft, the pilot and a weapons systems officer. The pilot was rescued within hours after ejecting, while the weapons officer evaded capture for more than a day in mountainous terrain before being recovered. It is not known whether he also saw the formation. During the rescue operation, another aircraft, an A-10, was also shot down, though its pilot ejected safely outside Iranian airspace.
The F-15 loss was the first time an American aircraft had been shot down over Iran during the conflict, and, according to two officials, it was also the second time that same pilot had to abandon an aircraft in the war after an earlier friendly-fire incident involving Kuwaiti forces. Some analysts remain skeptical of his account because he suffered a concussion in the crash, and several investigators sought to verify the details with him. The intelligence community is weighing explanations ranging from advanced military capability to a misidentification, while U.S. officials are also examining whether Iran received outside help developing its drone technology. A U.S. official said such technology could also have civilian uses.
