An American fighter pilot who was shot down during fighting with Iran told intelligence investigators that he saw an extraordinary drone pattern in the sky, one that looked to him like a jellyfish. According to CNN, intelligence officials are now trying to determine whether the sighting points to an advanced capability previously unknown, or whether it was a mistaken interpretation of what happened in combat.
The pilot, who was rescued after his aircraft was downed, said during an operational debrief that he saw a coordinated formation of unmanned aerial vehicles moving together as a single system, not as separate drones. Four people familiar with the debrief said he described the group as behaving like one body, with smaller drones appearing beneath the main ones and moving in sync. One source said the airspace looked to him like a "minefield of drones." The account was passed to intelligence officials shortly after his rescue.
The incident followed the shooting down of an American F-15 in the fighting with Iran. The two crew members abandoned the jet. The pilot was extracted within hours, while the navigator hid in a mountainous area for more than a day before being rescued. It is not known whether the navigator saw the same phenomenon.
U.S. intelligence has not reached a consensus on what the report means. Some officials are examining whether it reflects a new technological capability, while others think it may have been a misidentification or a distorted reading of the battlefield. The doubts are heightened because the pilot suffered a concussion after the crash, and investigators repeatedly checked with him to confirm what he had seen and how certain he was.
CNN said the specific capability described is not known to be part of Iran's drone arsenal, although there are assessments that Iran has received technological help from Russia and China in recent years to develop advanced unmanned systems. One possibility under review is that Iran may be able to control many drones as a single coordinated operational network.
